I've never seen the original so I can't compare them, but this was good and downright scary as ever!!! A great movie to scare you out of your socks! Violence is very very very strong, brutal and gory. No non-sense drug use or drinking, just a genuine female character taking time out with her friends to kick her heroin habit. The whole atmosphere of the film was frightening, it's ridiculous! I liked it a lot! The characters were really decent (unlike a lot of other lame characters in horror movies who act stupid), they were likable and actually cared for each other as true friends would. What a movie! I've never seen anything so brutally violent. Just to include, this film may be too intense for younger teens, as the nightmarish, demonic imagery, strong profanity, rape sequence, animal cruelty, and disturbing sexual content will be upsetting or unnerving to some who aren't accustomed to the horror genre. If you have a propensity for extremely graphic horror violence and gore, caring less for the poorly executed storyline and egregious dialogue, then you will enjoy this one. Pretty linear, huh? The Evil Dead is mainly manufactured for the eyes of the sadist. The 2013 version of the horror classic is not terrible, as for the special effects were the only star component of the film the plot and setting is blatantly predicable - a secluded old cabin in the woods, a bunch of young adults seek an escape in an effort to help of their friends get sober from her drug addiction, then they discover a book heavily incorporated with dark Satanic incantations and scriptures - and decided to recite from it, thinking there would be no consequence of doing so, then. In my opinion, this film is off-limits to anyone except adults. David, the equivalent to Ash from the original, is a positive role model for persevering through the strange demonic episodes that are happening in the haunted house and not abandoning his possessed sister, no matter what it takes to save her from the demons inside her. The only positive message is when the main character is a drug addict and she promises to quit near the beginning of the film by pouring a bag of heroin into a well. The “tree rape” scene that is repeated from the original should make the sex 2/5 instead of 1/5 to raise a little more awareness, even though it is a little less graphic than the original, since it is still graphic in this version. I think CSM is wrong by saying that most of the profanity is shown written in the book, because more profanity is said than written. The language is also worse in this film than the original, with “f-k” being the most commonly used, followed by a few uses of “s-t”, one or two uses of “c-k”, one use of “c-t”, and more. The violence is extremely gut-wrenching and no doubt makes this film one of the most violent films I have ever seen.

There are only one or two scenes free of violence and peril. It is extremely gory and graphic and not for anyone under 18. I think it should have been rated NC-17 or be rated NC-17. I do not understand, though, why this film passed for an R rating. After all, it was made in 2013, with more advanced technology and special effects, when the original was made in 1981. This film, in my opinion, is more violent than its 1981 predecessor.
